The short version
Semax is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide developed in Russia from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). It is one of the most studied nootropic peptides in existence — it is actually on Russia's Vital and Essential Drugs list and has been used clinically there for stroke recovery, cognitive disorders and optic nerve disease for decades. In the West, it has not gone through FDA approval and is classed as a research chemical. It is most commonly studied for cognitive enhancement, focus, memory, and neuroprotection, delivered as a nasal spray that reaches the brain rapidly via the olfactory pathway.
How it works — in plain English
Semax works primarily by upregulating BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor, the protein responsible for building and maintaining neural connections. BDNF is essentially fertiliser for the brain: it supports the growth of new neurons, strengthens synaptic connections, and protects existing neurons from stress and damage. Semax also modulates dopamine and serotonin metabolism, which is likely why some research reports improvements in mood and motivation alongside cognitive effects. The intranasal route allows rapid absorption directly into the brain via the nasal mucosa, bypassing the blood-brain barrier that makes many compounds ineffective when taken orally.
